Predecessor of Pretty Woman without happy ending
Belive it or not this Story published in 1848 was a base of “La Travita” opera.
The protagonist, Marguerite Gautier`s character is based on Marie Duplessis, the real-life lover of Dumas. No wonder he had Inspiration.. ohh wait Dumas was a former “Richard Gere”, what an enlightenmentt.
We have a courtesan who is suffering from tuberculosis (which doesn`t make any sense, why is she not suffering from some venereal disease, if she really has to suffer from stg..) and we have a young bourgeois, Armand Duval. Marguerite got her nickname by a camellia she is wearing, red one when she is having her days and white one when she is available to her Lovers. This is a real ” language of flowers“, if you know what I mean.
Armand convince her to give up her Profession and move to the countryside with him, but his father interrupts their relationship and Marguerite leaves Armand. He thinks until her death that she left him for another man. Marguerite agony is very very very long. However, at the end of her life she regrets everything, still doesn`t help her.
Old courtesan story doesn´t end up as a Cinderella story.
